The bad and the good: An accident and a giveaway

The bad news: I was in a car accident last Tuesday. It wasn't anything too serious but I ended up with a hurt neck and my arm on a sling. I thank God my children were not in the car with me at that moment so nothing happened to them, but still I haven't felt good enough to sit down and work. I'm making myself rest during the mornings where my little ones are at school, but in the afternoons it's kind of hard trying to recover when your 2 year old pulls you from the collar and tries to move you like a puppet :P

The good news: Remember that I told you I was going to be a teacher on the incredible year-long online class Life book 2013? Well, I have one spot to give away to a lucky winner. Yes, you read correctly. A spot for an entire year of workshops and inspiration.

Join me and 20 more amazing teachers who are all gearing up to share our mixed media techniques, tips and tricks with YOU! The class is themed around self-development and healing, and you'll be creating a minimum of 2 loose mixed media art journal pages per month (through a minimum of 2 lessons a month) which by the end of the year you will bind into a glorious journal (a Life Book)!"

If you haven't signed up yet, here's your opportunity to win one spot.
And if you signed up and you win, you can get a refund or offer the spot you won to someone who really needs it, that happened a lot last year. (Thanks a lot for your generosity!)

All you have to do is share this address:

on your Facebook, Twitter or Blog and leave a comment here on my blog letting me know where you shared it to enter the giveaway. Winner will be announced on October 31st (It's a great Halloween treat!)

Good Luck and see you there!!!

On my desk and on my shop today!

Hello everybody! How was your weekend? Here it's getting colder. Not as cold as the North must be now for sure, but we're using sweaters now and very soon will be using scarfs and jackets and boots and all that winter gear, and I have the perfect accent to it!
I made a very small batch of brooches and they're in the shop ready to ship.

I'm also making boxes, it's been a while since the last time I made some and with the Holidays approaching I thought it would be a great idea to have a unique box that you can use either as a gift by itself or to contain another gift (2 in one!).  They're still in progress but will be ready very soon. I still haven't decided if I should add some stenciled details or hand drawn... or both? Anyway, while I decide what the next step is I'll let you with this picture of my table today.

Have a great week!

I just couldn't stop myself...

If you have been following me for a while you probably know by now that I'm kind of obsessive-compulsive, specially when it comes to making stuff. When I want to do something I just can't do anything else until that energy has been released and the ideas had taken form. Think of me as a Forrest Gump in the scene when he runs, and runs and runs some more and one day he just stops. That's me right there. If I want to make dolls I make dolls, and more dolls and more dolls and then I stop and move to something else.  I haven't stopped yet, but next ones will be more Holiday related I think. I just can't find good faux fur anywhere (If you know of good places to get it please share!)

So this time I made 4 fabric art dolls that are treat-or-tricksters, 2 Frida Catrinas (but one already found a good home, thank you!) and an Alice doll (totally unrelated, but she just appear out of nowhere and who am I to prevent her from existing?).

They're on my little shop now in case you want to get there first and grab your favorite ;)

Danita's Medal for Merit Goes To Felix Baumgartner

I case you've been under a rock for the past weeks, Felix Baumgartner jumped out from a balloon at 120,000 feet.... And survived.

I followed Felix's jump story since Mr. Danita showed it to me, Little Danita and Mr. Danita are space geeks, and I'm not that much into it but I found his feat very interesting and we've been following his story.

We were all disappointed when the jump got cancelled and I felt so bad for him when I saw his face on a pic they posted on the cancellation day =(

Then on Sunday we got to watch the jump live while we were at balloon fiesta... I was on the edge when I saw him step up to the edge and then jump!

I found what he did inspiring, my daughter wants to be an astronaut one day and his jump got her exited about it and made it real. He reminded us that if you really set your mind into it you can do what you what you want, no matter how crazy and insane it looks to someone else.

For That Mr Felix, I award you the

Danita's Medal For Merit,
For Being Such A Brave And Inspiring Man

A really fun weekend (and meeting artist Kathie Olivas)

Hi! How was your weekend?
Mine was great! We had a chance to go to the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in New Mexico and we had a blast!  We also ride the Tramway and visited the Aquarium. All in one day!!! I'm super exhausted but happy and ready to start my week.

We arrived there on Saturday afternoon and went to a shop named Papers  in the Historic Nob Hill Shopping Center, there are lots of interesting stores and dinning places out there, but we had to leave and my husband took a wrong turn in a street and guess what was there? The Stranger Factory Gallery!

I saw this big sculpture by artist Kathie Olivas in the storefront through my window and I made my husband stop.  So we went inside, took a look at the wonderful art that was there and I got to meet the amazing Kathie in person! I've been a fan of her for years and I was so excited I forgot to take a picture of us (darn!)... but here's a link to her site so you can see more of her wonderful art. The best part of that visit? She loved my art! How cool is that? That someone you admire so much tells you she likes what you do is priceless!

So, I'm home now, with this beautiful dolls on progress and really inspired to make more art!

What about your weekend? Did you have fun?

Long weekend, lots of new stuff!

So how was your weekend? I enjoy mine very much. My husband had Monday off and we spent it together during the morning while the kids are at school. We went to have breakfast to a restaurant and then went home to watch "The hunger games". I wanted to watch it even since it was on the Movie Theater but we couldn't, but yesterday, popcorn and all, we did.  We needed the time alone so bad!

I also got time to finish some of the works in progress that I had in my table!

First, I finished the Frida Catrina paintings that I had in progress.

I also finished this one, not a Catrina, but a Frida.

And guess what else?
Mini dolls and some bigger ones.
I'm still not done with Halloween, I wish I had more time to do all the stuff that it's in my mind!

Shop update will be this Thursday,
I'll share some more new stuff tomorrow and tell you the time.
  Stay tuned!

Too early for Calendars?

I decided to start working on my calendar earlier this year.
It's a full 12 months worth of some of your most favorite images for you to enjoy all year long.

Like last year, it will come with two options, the first one is with a vintage woodblock as a base and the second one is the calendar alone so you can display it any way you like it.

What do you think?
If you want to go ahead and start getting yours and some extras as gifts for your friends, they're right here.

Mixed Media From The Heart Is Back As A Self Paced Class

My Online Class Is Back
For A Self Paced Session
you can take at your own pace!

Sign Up Today With A Discounted Rate Of $99.00

When I designed my online class, I had in mind helping you explore your creative side rather than giving you a formula on how to paint nice things, I wanted to help you create from the heart, to give you wings and let you fly to find your own perfect creative land.

I'm glad to tell you that I achieved that goal and the class was sold out very quickly, and everyone involved on the class finished very happy with what they learned from the class. I've been following our facebook forum where my students continue to post their art and creating a thriving community of artists... I'm so happy to have been part of it!

I got lots of requests for opening the class again after it was sold out, and now I am offering the class as a self paced course that you will be able to take in your own time. If you didn't have the chance to take it on the first wave, now's the time to enroll!

Filled with the same content of the first class, you will be able to explore your creative side while you learn about color, inspiration, art journaling and creating from your heart. The class is filled with downloadable HD videos that walk you step by step through the same techniques I use on my original creations while you discover what moves you as an artist and you develop your own personal style and art with personal meaning that speaks to everyone who sees it.

Sign up today and be part of the magic that we share on the growing community of "Mixed Media From The Heart". Here's a sample of what my students are saying about the class:

"Danita, I have appreciated your generosity in sharing your art process. It has been very inspiring and I have learned so much. I'm looking forward to creating my own art now."

"Danita I have enjoyed this class immensely! Thank you for opening your art studio, work, and process with us. I am so inspired to create and there is so much happiness in my heart at this very moment. Thank you for giving us this opportunity. May God bless you :)"

"This has been the most wonderful, inspiring, thought provoking and encouraging experience. I am so very grateful to you Danita for sharing your creative process and for being so available, generous and down to earth. I have enjoyed your videos very much, so helpful and informative. I've still got quite a bit of the course to attempt myself due to space and time issues, but thanks to you I have all the tools now to proceed and find my own voice. So a million thanks to you too Danita for sharing your voice and heart, I have loved every bit of this course and shall miss it very much."

"Hi Danita, I just wanted to say a big thank you to you for sharing your processes with us & for teaching this course so openly. This is honestly the best e-course I have taken. It was laid out very professionally, it was exactly what I was looking for & it has answered so many questions. I think I have finally found a style that's really me- it makes me feel happy- as I look back over my work throughout the years it was actually staring me in the face & I just didn't realize it."

"Danita, a million thanks to you for having this class! I agree with others, this is the best e-class I have ever taken. Very professional. I love the format of of the videos! Confession - I hear your voice in my head sometimes. Thanks for letting us look inside your creative process A color journal instead of disjointed pieces of paper and an art journal for experiments and freedom; who knew? Thank you so much for sharing your tips and tricks. Watching you work through your "mistakes" was just wonderful. The interviews were great too! Nice touch. I knew your paintings were special when I first saw them. Now I know why."
